In the life and studio of LA-based, Trinidad-born artist Miles Regis, every action is an opportunity for creative self-expression. Prolific in both fine art and fashion design, he freely swaps materials between the two to enrich his work. His mixed media paintings incorporate dimensional collage elements—denim, buttons, sequins, and found textiles—alongside gestural abstract and figurative techniques. Aggressively hopeful, Regis embraces storytelling in stylized renditions of love, loss, freedom, activism, and living history.
Regis favors the simplicity of black and white structure juxtaposed with complex color, often using eyes as a recurring motif to encourage the viewer to look deeper. These paintings are layered with vibrant hues and text, iconography that also appears in his original wearable art. Hand-painted by the artist, each garment highlights a narrative process that expresses the personal and collective mythologies enshrined in his canvas works.
Regis has also expanded into new media. In 2017, he created signature scents during a residency at LA’s Institute for Art and Olfaction, and is an early adopter of Virtual Reality as a fine art application. By building compositional structures layer by layer—sometimes paired with his own electronic beats—Regis creates kinetic visual worlds that make a case for VR as a vital tool for contemporary artists.
Regis was featured in a national Ford F-150 commercial, and his work is in the permanent collections of Intel, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the California African American Museum, and Senegal’s La Musee Borindar. He has exhibited with Art Basel Miami and Coachella, and has been featured on CNN, Forbes, and Ebony Magazine.
