The Woman Code Series

In the Woman Code (2018), I delve into the the symbolic meanings and design of Adire textiles; which are resist-dyed fabrics made up of complex symbols and patterns that convey specific meanings. The artwork encodes messages and proverbs which were used to communicate information and influence the unfolding of events.
During the history of Adire, women were not allowed to speak and express their opinions in public by the ruling class of men in the society. Adire symbols on fabric were used as a communication and expression mechanism among the Yoruba women of south-western Nigeria to overcome these barriers of patriarchy. In the work I strip away the symbols off the fabric onto female form highlighting its truest meaning and origin. It is an allegory of the woman wearing and expressing her subjugated voice and beliefs; it’s a symbolic expression of her true self and the wider community and language of women.
The artwork is made up of 3 editions each per size.

Dans la serie « Le Code de la femme » (2018), je plonge dans les significations symboliques et la conception des textiles Adire; qui sont des tissus composés de symboles et de motifs complexes qui véhiculent des significations spécifiques. L'œuvre encode des messages et des proverbes qui ont été utilisés pour communiquer des informations et influencer le déroulement des événements.
Au cours de l'histoire d'Adire, les femmes n'étaient pas autorisées à parler et à exprimer leurs opinions en public par la classe dirigeante des hommes de la société. Les symboles Adire sur tissu ont été utilisés comme mécanisme de communication et d'expression parmi les femmes yoruba du sud-ouest du Nigéria pour surmonter ces barrières du patriarcat. Dans ce travail, je dépouille les symboles du tissu sur une forme féminine en soulignant sa signification et son origine la plus vraie. C'est une allégorie de la femme portant et exprimant sa voix et ses croyances pourtant subjuguées ; c'est une expression symbolique de sa vraie personnalité, de la communauté et du langage des femmes.
L'œuvre est composée de 3 éditions chacune par taille.
