Genesis is a piece from Bâ Simba's "Women of Steel" series. The piece honors the African mother and child who are separated by circumstances, and the child who is removed from his ancestral home; Simba himself was brought to America as an adolescent by Christian missionaries who promised to help his family in Congo. Instead, Simba was abandoned in a foreign land, and had to learn and grow on his own. Genesis memorializes the relationship and shared identities between mother and child. Among the symbols in the foreground, the structures, parallel waves, and fish symbols represent Simba's tribe and ancestral home on the Congo River in Kindu, DRC.
