TROPIKA SERIES

EN:
TROPIKA is Rossouw's fifth series since 2010, seemingly abstract compositions and apparently incidental motifs and objects are transformed with multiple light sources and pigment to the point where their original forms are blurred from the recognisable. Aged, water-damaged concrete evokes bio luminescent waves in a state of stormy unrest, a drape of fabric evokes ancient ritual, found, dead twigs become sea coral vibrant with life. TROPIKA explores the idea of what may often, on the surface, appear idyllic elements in the image, but continues a key theme of identity, the sense of self in strange surroundings. The photograph does not exist isolated. It forms a fluid stream of associations and connections. Each image becomes an intimate invitation to the viewer by both photographer and subject into a moment within that greater conversation. TROPIKA animates these feelings of dislocation between home and away, light and dark, chaos and calm, life and dreams.

FR:
